March 11, 2012
The Golden Eagles (10-6) won for the second consecutive time as they captured the series with the Ragin' Cajuns.
Four different Southern Miss players registered three hits apiece including Michael Sterling, Robbins, Brown and Dillon Day while Connor Barron added two safeties to lead the 14-hit Golden Eagle attack.
After falling behind 2-0 on a two-run double by Dylan Butler, the Golden Eagles exploded for five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. It was one of two innings the Golden Eagles scored in as they added five more in the ninth.
After a sacrifice fly by Austin Roussel which drove home Day, who tripled, the Golden Eagles tallied infield singles by Sterling and Barron in the fifth. Barron's single, though, was misplayed and thrown down the rightfield line allowing Sterling to score from first. After Ashley Graeter reached on a fielding error, Robbins tallied a RBI double and Brown connected for his third home run of the year, a three-run shot, to make the score 6-2.
After the Cajuns (9-7) added a solo run in the sixth on RBI fielder's choice by Dominick Francia, USM added insurance in the ninth.
The first five batters in the ninth reached base as Robbins drove in two runs with a single, followed by an RBI double from Brown. Joe Martin then added a sacrifice fly and Day drove in a run with his second double of the afternoon to complete the visitors' scoring.
Andrew Pierce (2-1) went six strong innings to register the victory, allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and three stikeouts. Cameron Giannini threw the final three frames to earn his first save of the campaign, surrendering just a hit and a walk.
UL starter Austin Robichaux (0-2) suffered the loss lasting just 4 2/3.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama in a 6:05 p.m., contest.
