HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tyler Girouard collected four hits and drove in three runs to lead Louisiana-Lafayette to a 9-1 non-conference baseball victory over Southern Miss here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (7-8) dropped the three-game series to the Cajuns (13-3) after winning the opener 9-2 on Friday night.
UL Lafayette scored three runs on a Golden Eagle error in the third and Austin Robichaux threw solid five innings to get the Cajuns up early.
Dex Kjerstad led off the visitor's third inning with a single, before Ryan Leonards reached on a throwing error by Michael Sterling. After a fielder's choice, Girouard laced a single to center and drove home a run. The singlem though, was misplayed by Eagle centerfielder Dillon Day and Girouard and another base runner were also able to score on the play to give UL a 3-0 advantage.
Robichaux limited the Eagles to just one base runner over the first four innings before Tim Lynch collected the first hit of the game for USM with a double. After a single by Blake Brown to extend his team-best hitting streak to nine games, Mason Robbins drove in the Golden Eagles' lone run with a sacrifice fly.
Robichaux improve to 2-0 by allowing just three hits and walk with two strikeouts over five innings.
USM starter Conor Fisk suffered the loss in his first appearance of the season by allowing three unearned runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Seven Golden Eagle pitchers combined for 12 UL Lafayette strikeouts.
The Cajuns added to their lead with two more runs in the sixth and four more tallies in the ninth.
Lynch and Brown each led the Golden Eagles with two hits.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to Pearl, Miss., to face Mississippi State in the two schools' only meeting of the season.
