Early Runs Lead Mizzou over Baseball Saturday Afternoon
The Golden Eagles fall in the first two games of the series.
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri scored five times over the first two innings to jump out to an early advantage and fend off Southern Miss, 6-4, here Saturday afternoon at Taylor Stadium in non-conference baseball action.
The Golden Eagles (6-9) lost for the third-straight time as they gave up three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. The Tigers improved to 6-6 on the year.
Down 5-0, the Golden Eagles cut into the home team's margin in the third inning. Freshman Chuckie Robinson opened the frame by reaching on a throwing error by Mizzou shortsop Ryan Howard. After an out and a single by Nick Dawson, Barron drove in both runners with a double to left-centerfield. Mason Robbins then added a sacrifice fly to cut the gap to 5-3.
Southern Miss added another tally in the sixth on a Bradley Roney single, before the Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth on a double steal.
Mizzou, though, raced out to an early lead sending all nine batters to the plate in the first frame. After getting a groundout to start the bottom of the frame.
Southern Miss starter A.J. Glasshof (1-1) then issued three consecutive walks and then followed by RBI singles from Dylan Kelly and Dillon Everett. Jake Ivory finished the scoring after he drove in a run by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Tigers added to their lead off of Glasshof with a run-scoring single from Ryan Howard in the second and then with a bases-loaded walk to Zach Lavy, which was issued by reliever Jake Winston.
Glasshof allowed five runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout and a hit batter over 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Mizzou starter John Miles improved to 2-0 as he gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts, while Keaton Steele threw two scoreless innings down the stretch to register his second-straight save of the series and the fourth overall this season.
The final game of the set will be played Sunday at 12 noon.
