Southern Miss Uses Three-Run Eighth Inning To Defeat Illinois State, 4-3, In Game Two

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Illinois State in a 4-3 come-from-behind victory, today, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,174.
The Golden Eagles (8-3) scored a single run in the first inning and was held scoreless from the second through the seventh innings. In the eighth inning, Trey Sutton reached on a two-out single up the middle, advanced to second when pinch hitter Drew Carson reached on an infield single and then scored on Luke Adkins single up the middle.
Marc Maddox was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Michael Ewing hit a hard grounder up the middle that Redbird second baseman Jesse Griswold made a great play to stop. When he tried to retire Maddox at second base, he threw it over shortstop Ryan Anetsberger's head. Carson scored on Ewing's hit to tie the game, and pinch runner Bo Davis scored the winning run on the errant throw from Griswold.
Daniel Best (4) earned his fourth save of the season, pitching the final inning, allowing one base runner to reach and striking out one. Ryan Belanger (3-0) earned his third win of the season, pitching the final two outs of the eighth inning. Starter Scott Massey pitched the first 7.1 innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits, walking two and striking out four batters.
Illinois State relief pitcher Kitt Kopach (0-2) was credited with the loss, pitching one-third of an inning, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits. Starter Jim Sajewich pitched seven strong innings, giving up one run on two hits, walking one and striking out three. Dan Sorce came on in relief in the eighth inning, pitching two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on one hit.
Southern Miss scored four runs on six hits and committed three errors, while Illinois State (1-6) scored three runs on three hits and committed one error. Sutton and Ewing led the Golden Eagles with two hits each.
The Golden Eagles scored a single run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Sutton lead off with a single to right field, advanced to second when Toddric Johnson was hit by a pitch and scored on Ewing's single to center field.
The Redbirds tied the game in the fourth inning. Gabe DeMarco reached to lead off the inning when Golden Eagle shortstop Brian Dozier made an errant throw. Jay Molina singled to send DeMarco to third and Kyle O'Brien flew out to center to score DeMarco.
Illinois State scored another run in the sixth inning to take the one-run lead, 2-1. DeMarco reached once again to lead off the inning on a fielding error by Dozier, moved to second on a wild pitch from Massey and scored when Molina reached on a fielding error by Dozier.
The Redbirds added another run in the eighth inning to take a two-run lead, 3-1. Matt Bolt reached with one out when he was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Kevin Konsler double to left field and scored when Molina flew out to right center.
Southern Miss and Illinois State play the final game of the three-game series, tomorrow, at Noon, CT, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
