Baseball Splits Twinbill with UT Martin Saturday Afternoon
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored in double digits in a pair of games with UT Martin Saturday afternoon, but split the twinbill in winning the opener 13-4 and dropping the nightcap 13-10.
The Golden Eagles (5-2) scored 39 runs in the three-game series and collected 42 hits, but fell behind early in the final game of the series and could not rally in the affair. The pitching staff added 40 strikeouts of Skyhawk hitters in 27 innings of work.
In the opening game, Southern Miss put together a pair of five-run innings and got two hits each from Gabe Montenegro, Matt Wallner, Hunter Slater and Daniel Keating in pounding out a total of 15 hits in the contest.
Keating notched a team-best three RBI, while Wallner and Slater knocked in two runs apiece.
Golden Eagle starter Stevie Powers (1-0) went a career-long six innings in the contest and allowed just four runs (three earned) on five hits and fanned four to earn the victory. Cody Carroll threw the final three innings and allowed just one hit and fanned six to post his first save of the season.
Skyhawk starter Winston Cannon allowed 10 runs on 10 hits over 3 2/3 with four walks and four strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-2.
In the nightcap, the Skyhawks (1-6) jumped out with three runs in the opening frame including a two-run shot Blake Davis, his first of the season.
UT Martin extended that lead and held an 11-1 advantage after a JoJo Allen grand slam, his first homer of the year, in the fifth.
The Golden Eagles rallied with a five-run seventh to cut the gap to two runs at 11-9, as Luke Reynolds popped a three-run homer, his team-high fourth, and Daniel Keating added a solo shot, his second, to key the big scoring inning.
Davis, who paced UTM with five RBI in the second game, gave the visitors much needed insurance one frame later as he singled home two runs in the eighth to give UTM enough cushion to hold off the Golden Eagles for their first victory of the season.
Keating had three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Golden Eagle attack, while Cole Donaldson, who also homered for the first time of the year, drove in three runs along with Reynolds. Jaylon Keys, off the bench, added two RBI.
Southern Miss starter J.C. Keys suffered the loss (0-1) allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits with five strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Sam Polk went six innings for UTM, giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts to get the win and improve to 1-0.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to New Orleans for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
