HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tyler Ray limited Southern Miss to just six hits over seven innings as the visiting Troy Trojans defeated the Golden Eagles 3-0 here Friday night in the first of a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Ray (2-0) did not walk a batter and fanned three in the outing as he pitched out of his biggest jam in the sixth.
Kameron Brunty and Jared Bales led off the frame with consecutive singles, but Ray enticed a groundout and then a pair of fly outs to end the threat. Southern Miss (2-3) left 10 runners on base in the contest.
Troy notched solo runs in each of the first two innings as Boone Shear got the Trojans (3-1) on the board in the opening frame with a run-scoring single. Tyler Hannah then knocked in the second run a frame later with an RBI single as well.
Hannah completed the scoring for Troy with a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth.
Troy chased Southern Miss starter Chase Horn in the second as they tallied a couple of runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Horn, who lasted 1 2/3, fell to 0-2 on the campaign.
Reliever Jay Myrick was the star on the mound for Southern Miss in the contest as he came in for Horn and allowed just one unearned run over 6 2/3 innings while fanning a career-best nine to go along with two hits and two walks.
Freshman Mason Robbins led the Golden Eagles offensive with a pair of singles in their six-hit attack.
The second game of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans are reminded that they can use their Saturday ticket stub for a $5 admission to the men's basketball game against Rice slated for 7 p.m., that evening. It is Fan Appreciation Day and many exciting prizes will be given away during the hoops contest.
