Belanger Picks Up First Win of Season in Relief

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Southern Miss sophomore second baseman Trey Sutton went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, and freshman outfielder Michael Ewing finished with two hits, including his first home run of his career and a game-high three RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles to an 11-3 victory over Mississippi Valley State, today, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Ryan Belanger (1-0) came on in relief of starter Barry Bowden in the second inning and earned his first win of the season. He pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out five. Nick Valluzzo (1) earned his first save of the season, pitching the final three outs, giving up one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two. Bowden pitched the first inning, giving up one run on one hit, walking three and striking out one.
Mississippi Valley State starter Darrel Dinger (0-2) dropped his second decision of the season, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on four hits and walking three batters.
Ewing and Jody Blount hit their first home runs of the season, Ewing's to right center in the first inning and Blount's to right field in the sixth inning.
"I'm glad we hit a couple of long balls today," Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We didn't make any errors, and it was a good win. We have to become more consistent on the mound, getting our starters to go at least four or five innings.
"We went to Belanger early, and he looks like he's going to be a good one. "He threw well again, doesn't walk people and strikes out batters. I'm happy with him."
The Delta Devils were led by John Morgan, who had a home run and an RBI along with two hits, while Zach Penprase added two RBIs.
Mississippi Valley State took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Damon Lessler was walked to lead off the game, advanced to third on Corey Littleton's single through the right side and scored on Zach Penprase's ground out to second.
Southern Miss came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Sutton reached on a one-out single to right field, advanced to second when Kevin Coker reached on a fielding error by Devil shortstop Penprase. Ewing hit a three-run homer in the first inning, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Bo Davis and Trey Cuevas hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth inning. Davis scored on Cuevas' double, and Cuevas advanced to third when Blount flew out to right field and then scored on Brian Dozier's ground out to third.
Mississippi Valley State scored a run in the sixth inning when Morgan hit a solo shot to right-center field, cutting Southern Miss' lead to 5-2.
Southern Miss increased its lead by three runs in the sixth inning when Blount hit a two-run blast, pushing the lead to 7-2. Dozier walked, advanced to third on Sutton's double to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Marc Maddox to increase the lead to 8-2.
The Golden Eagles scored three more runs in the eighth inning to build their lead to 11-2. Blount scored off a Sutton single, followed immediately with Maddox hitting a triple that sent Dozier and Sutton to the plate.
The Delta Devils added a run in the ninth inning, as Tony Ohlssen scored off a fielder's choice ground out RBI by Penprase, finalizing the score, 11-3.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend in its home opening series at Pete Taylor Park against Birmingham Southern. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game will begin at 3 p.m. and Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m.
