Two Big Innings Lead to 14-2 Baseball Win over ULM
MONROE, La. - Southern Miss used a two-inning offensive explosion here Tuesday night at Warhawk Field to beat host ULM 14-2 in non-conference baseball action.
All nine Golden Eagle starters collected at least one hit and one RBI as the team scored its most runs since collecting 21 runs in the second game of a doubleheader against UAB at home on Apr. 27, 2013.
Southern Miss (2-2) collected a season-high eight runs in the third and added four more in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
In the decisive eight-run inning, the Golden Eagles got RBI singles from Michael Sterling and Mason Robbins, before Tim Lynch knocked in a run with a walk. A fielding error added another run, before Barron's infield single drove in a run. The scoring ended with a two-run Joey Harris double and a Dawson RBI groundout.
Durst started the five-run fourth with a run-scoring single of his own, followed by a RBI single by Barron and a two-run single by Dawson. Roussel ended the scoring by driving in a run with a one-base hit of his own.
The Golden Eagles added one more run in the seventh on a RBI triple from Durst. A.J. Glasshof (1-0) pitched five innings to get the victory, allowing just two runs on five hits with four walks and a career-high seven strikeouts. ULM starter Josh Leone (1-1) suffered the loss by allowing four runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
The Golden Eagles open the home portion of the schedule this weekend when they entertain Louisiana-Lafayette for three games at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game times are 6 p.m., on Friday, and 1 p.m., on both Saturday and Sunday.
