Baseball Falls in Lake Area Classic Finale to McNeese State 7-1

LAKE CHARLES, La. - McNeese State scored three times in both the third and seventh innings to lift the Cowboys to a 7-1 victory over Southern Miss here Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Lake Area Classic.
McNeese chased Golden Eagle starter Christian Talley after three innings, who allowed three runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
The Cowboys (3-0) strung four straight singles together in third which include RBIs from Connor Lloyd, Reed Gordy and Clay Payne.
Southern Miss cut the gap in the fourth on an RBI double by Tim Lynch, to bring in Robbins who singled earlier in the frame.
MSU reliever Tyler Erickson (1-0) went 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings to get the victory for the Cowboys, adding two strikeouts as well to get the victory. Michael Desabrais went 4 2/3 and gave up a run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts but did not throw the prerequisite five innings to earn the victory.
The Cowboys added three more runs in the seventh on a wild pitch, a fielder's choice by Gordy and a stolen base before plating their final run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Gooch.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday when they complete a four-game road swing to start the year with a 6 p.m., contest at ULM. The game can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
