Cross Country Gears Up for Last Regular Season Race
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss’ cross country team returns to action following a two-week break as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete in the Crimson Tide Classic. The race, which will be hosted by the University of Alabama is taking place at the Harry Pritchett Running Park.
The women's 6k race is slated to start at 9:45 a.m CT on Friday, October 13.
There will be 31 teams in attendance including three nationally and 14 regionally ranked teams including Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Georgia. Representing Conference USA, along with Southern Miss, is Middle Tennessee and UAB.
“This is an opportunity for us to compete against the best teams in the South,” said cross country coach Aaron Kindt. “You’ll have a good mix of SEC, Conference USA, and other top South Region ranked teams come out. It’ll be the first time this year we will get to see MTSU and UAB as well.”
Two weeks ago the Golden Eagles finished seventh out of 25 teams at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Freshman Kate Mattox led the team with a top 25 finish, running the 5K in 17:58.4.
“Coming off Notre Dame, I’d like to see our pack continue to tighten the spread,” continued Kindt. “We are starting to see it in practice, different people are stepping up to take control and carry a session. Excited to see if we can begin to translate these efforts into a race. I think we become a difficult team to contend with if we run the way we are capable as a group.”
