Cross Country Set to Run at Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational
The team is ranked eighth in the South Region
HATTIESBURG, Miss.—Southern Miss women’s cross country team heads to the Burke Golf Course for the 62nd annual Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational at 1 p.m. ET on Friday. The squad will compete in the Gold Division taking place at 3:15 p.m ET.
This will be the first time Southern Miss has competed at this specific location and it is looking to be one of the most competitive races in the country this year.
“Really excited to take this team up to South Bend to the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational,” said coach Aaron Kindt. “It’s an atmosphere we haven’t experienced before and our team is looking forward to the challenges a meet like this presents.”
The Golden Eagles enter the competition ranked eighth in the South Region, the highest ranking in school history. The field includes a handful of regional ranked teams including Indiana State, Temple and Northern Iowa, as well as conference opponents, UTSA and Marshall.
Two weeks ago at the Rebel Invitational, the team ran a 17 second spread with Kate Mattox leading the pack. The freshman has had a standout campaign so far, winning the Mississippi College Opener and was the first Golden Eagle to cross the finish line in Oxford.
“Kate has done a great job keeping things simple and not trying to do too much in her efforts so far,” said Kindt. “Her presence towards the front of races is a big boost, but this group strength is in numbers and keeping our spread across 1-7 small. If we can continue to build off of what we’ve done so far, I think we can have a lot of success moving forward.”
Senior Courtney Filliben returns to action for the first time in three weeks.
“We are getting closer to full strength with Courtney Filliben returning,” continued Kindt. ‘She’s looked very strong in practice these last two weeks and I look forward to having her veteran experience with us going into this weekend.”
