Cross Country Continues Season at Rebel Invitational
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Southern Miss cross country team travels to Oxford, Mississippi to compete in the Rebel Cross Country Invitational. The race will be hosted by Ole Miss and take place at the FNC Park on Sept. 15. Admission and parking is free.
The women's 5k race is slated to kickoff at 6:45 P.M.
“Heading up to Oxford this week is something a little different than what we’ve done in the past, said coach Aaron Kindt. “I think the opportunity, early in the season, to compete against a nationally ranked team is an important step for this young group. I’m interested to see how they handle themselves in this type of environment.”
Southern Miss ranks eleventh in the South Region after dominating the Mississippi College Opener. Ole Miss is ranked No. 16 in the USTFCCCA Coaches’ Poll and first in the South Region after taking first at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic.
The Golden Eagles had a solid showing the last time out, taking first place as a team and freshman Kate Mattox bringing home the individual collegiate title.
“One of the areas we wanted to work on coming off the season opener, was more consistency within in the group,” continued Kindt. “Closing the gap between our front runners and the core of our pack is an important piece that will determine a lot of our success this year. The workouts we have had these last two week have been really encouraging and I like the progress we’ve made on that front. Hopefully we see some of that work translate in their performance this week.”
After the Rebel Cross Country Invitational, the team will head to South Bend, Indiana to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 29.
