Golden Eagles Open Season at Mississippi College Opener
Running at Choctaw Trails, the site for the 2017 C-USA Cross Country Championships
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss cross country team travels to Clinton, Miss. to compete in the Mississippi College Opener. The race will be hosted by Mississippi College on Friday, Sept. 1 at Choctaw Trails.
“I am excited to be heading up to get a preview of the Conference Championship course we will be running come October,” coach Kindt said. “We’ve gotten off to a solid start with training these first couple weeks, I am really interested to see how the group executes early in the season.”
The Golden Eagles were predicted to finish fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll for C-USA and were also ranked 11th in the South Regional preseason poll.
A youthful but veteran squad returns for Southern Miss as they feature six underclassman with experience and one new addition, freshman, Kate Mattox.
After coming off of a great finish in the 2016 season, finishing fourth in the conference, tying the school record previously set in the 2015 season, the coaching staff is excited to watch the underclassmen the next few weeks as they start to find their roll on the team.
Following the race this weekend, Southern Miss will be racing at the Rebel Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 15, hosted by Ole Miss.
