Eight Golden Eagles Qualify for NCAA East Preliminary

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Eight members of the Southern Miss track and field teams are headed to the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Championship from May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla., on the campus of North Florida for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Eight Golden Eagles will vie for a chance to advance to the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Ore., as individuals must finish in the top 12 in the quarterfinal round.
Senior Ethan Rich will compete in the javelin as he enters the competition ranked in the top 20. Rich finished fourth at the C-USA Meet.
Senior Randy McCoy recorded a qualifying time of 13.99 in the 110-meter hurdles ranks him among the top 40 leaders. Derrick Johnson will compete in the 400 meters after posting a qualifying time at the Alabama-Mississippi Border Classic.
Junior Courtland Wells posted a mark of 7'0.25" to rank in a tie for 17th in the high jump competition.
Richard and Robert Collingwood return to the regional competition after red-shirting last season. Richard will compete in the discus while Robert will compete in the shot.
Junior Rachel Polk will compete in the shot put and discus. Polk ranks 50 in the shot and no. 8 in the discus with a school record 175'0". Kayla Taylor is set to compete in the discus. She ranks in the top 40 in her event.
Competition gets underway on May 29 with Rich competing in the javelin at 12 p.m., followed Robert Collingwood competing in the shot at 4 p.m. with Rogers competing in the preliminary round of the 400 meters. Polk, Taylor and McCoy are slated to compete on Friday in their respective events with Richard Collingwood, Polk and well set for competition on Saturday.
