Golden Eagles Travel to Nashville to Compete in Vanderbilt Invitational
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field team, coming off an excellent start to the indoor season, heads to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the two-day Vanderbilt Invitational.
“We get to see schools from the SEC, Big 12, ACC, and the top teams from C-USA,” said head coach Jon Stuart. “It’s a good ‘early season measuring stick’ to find out how we stack up to good competition.”
The Invitational features an impressive list of participating teams and unattached competitors. Teams from Alabama, Auburn, Belmont, Connecticut, Furman, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma, SMU, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Tulane, UAB, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky along with the Southern Miss squad will compete at the invitational.
Southern Miss combined for three school records and three event wins last week at the Vulcan Invitational. Sophomore Nadia Maffo broke her own previously set record in the women’s weight throw with a launch of 19.31m. Junior transfer McKinely West broke two school records both the men’s 60m (6.68) and the 200m (21.40).
“We had solid performances from a handful of individuals last week,” continued Stuart. “This week, I expect everyone to contribute to a great team effort.”
The meet opens Friday afternoon, with field events starting at 4 p.m. CT, and running events at 7 p.m. Most of the action is scheduled for Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
