Track and Field to Open Indoor Season at the Vulcan Invitational
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss track and field team heads to Birmingham to compete in the Vulcan Invitational, hosted by UAB on Saturday, Jan. 13.
In his fourth season with the Golden Eagles, head coach Jon Stuart is looking to open the indoor season on the right foot after coming off a strong fall semester of training.
"The first meet always gives us a gauge of our fitness and how well we prepared during the Christmas Break, said Stuart. “It’s exciting for the athletes and the coaches, because we know the work has been done and it’s time to compete.”
The 2018 squad is returning four C-USA Champions from the 2017 season along with several new faces that bring some elite credentials.
Senior Cra’vorkian Carson returns to the Birmingham Crossplex Arena where he claimed his first place medal in the men’s 60m at the 2017 C-USA Indoor Championships. Courtney Filliben, the silver medalist from the Indoor Championships in the women’s 800m is also returning to the lineup.
Rian Robinson, transfer from Barton Community College, enters her first Southern Miss meet after finishing second in the 400m at the NJCAA Championships last season. Another new face to the Golden Eagle roster is John Warren, a transfer from Missouri where he was a Second Team All-American in the triple jump.
Following this meet in Birmingham, the Golden Eagles with travel to Nashville, Tenn. to compete in the Vanderbilt Invitational that takes place Jan. 19 and Jan. 20.
