Women's Cross Country Team Claims Fourth at the Ken Garland Invitational
DENTON, Texas - The Southern Miss cross country team placed fourth out of seven teams with 111 points in the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday at the Eagle Point Cross Country Course.
"The ladies overall had a solid day," Coach Aaron Kindt said. "We've had to deal with some injuries and illnesses as a group the last few weeks, but I was happy to see our ladies fight and scrap to the finish. There were a lot of positives today, that we can use to build off of, as we move deeper into the fall."
Southern Miss finished behind Rice (24), SMU (42) and North Texas (75) while finishing ahead of TCU (112), UTSA (138) and Texas Wesleyan (182).
Each Golden Eagle turned in season-best times as redshirt sophomore Rebecca Ulrich led the way for the Golden Eagles as she covered the 5K course in a time of 18:33.84 in placing 13th overall. Daphney Stanford was next with a time of 18:49.22, Kristin Zarrella ran a time of 18:58.99, Alondra Hoyos who recorded a time of 19:34.42. Rounding out the Southern Miss finishes included Katie Canavin with a time of 19:51.18 and Dana Dillistone with a time of 19:59.72.
"Rebecca Ulrich continues to be a steady leader for our team and had another quality performance this morning," said Kindt. "She will no doubt be right up there with the best in our conference at the end of the year."
"Daphney Stanford has been getting better and better each week. You can see her starting to make that jump to the next level. Very exciting". Kristen Zarrella also had a big day after missing most of the last year due to injuries. She will continue to be a big contributor for us this season"
Southern Miss will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., Oct. 17, for the Crimson Tide Classic.
