NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Miss cross country team turned in a stellar performance at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic, placing two runners in the top 15 in finishing sixth overall out of 21 Division I teams with a score of 190.
Redshirt freshman Rebecca Ulrich ran a season-best time of 17:38.16 in the 5K course, placing 12th overall while sophomore Felice Johnson recorded a time of 17:39.45 to finish 14th overall. Only 31 second separated the top 15 runners.
True freshman Kristin Zarrella covered the course with a time of 18:21.13 for 43rd place while freshman teammate Courtney Filliben ran a time of 18:59.56 to finish 71st overall. Rounding out remaining freshmen group included Daphney Stanford with a time of 19:01.73, Katie Canavin ran a time of 19:09.16 and Dana Dillistone posted a time of 19:13.95.
Vanderbilt took the team title with a score of 38 points followed by Lipscomb with 68 points, Ole Miss was third with 87 points, Mississippi State fourth with 103 points and Central Arkansas fifth with 169 points.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas on Oct. 5.
