Track and Field Sends One to Podium After Second Day of C-USA Competition
Maffo Named Champion in Hammer Throw
EL PASO, Texas – Freshman Nadia Maffo is the first on the podium of a talented Southern Miss outdoor track and field team. The C-USA Championships will start back up tomorrow, Saturday, at 2 pm CT with the field events beginning with women’s discus and the running events will start up at 6 pm.
Maffo clinched the win after a 59.14m throw in the finals. Dreu Dixson from Rice came in second with a 56.92m toss and Fayon Gonzales finished third after a 56.82m mark.
“Nadia was as solid as ever,” said head coach Jon Stuart. “She led the competition the entire way and gave us our first champion. Coach Svoboda has done a super job of getting her ready since coming in at mid-year. There’s great pressure to perform at this meet and Nadia simply stepped up.”
Zaria Jones finished fourteenth in the heptathlon with 4544 points, her collegiate best. Jones tied for first in the high jump which put 855 points on the total.
Victoria Hoppe and Theresa Harto finished the day up in the 10,000m race. Harto finished ninth running the distance in 38:51.59 and Hoppe came in thirteenth with a 40:28.27 time.
Southern Miss women’s squad currently sits in fifth with ten points.
