Golden Eagle Track & Field Teams Collect 10 Event Champions at the Southern Miss Invitational
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's and women's track and field teams collected a season-best 10 event champions in addition to recording 37, top eight finishes Saturday in a rain delayed Southern Miss Invitational.
Rachel Polk was a two-time event winner, placing first in the discus with a throw of 49.94m (163-10), then, posted a throw of 14.59m (47-10.50) in the shot for first place. Kayla Taylor took second in the discus and shot with marks of 49.55m (162-7) and 13.53m (47-4.75). Brashe' Wood was third in the shot with a throw of 12.75m (41-10.50) while placing fifth in the discus with a mark of 39.74m (130-4).
The women's 4x100 relay team took the top time in the event with a time of 45.51. The 4x400 relay team also finished first with a time of 3:52.90.
Dana Dillistone and Daphney Stanford finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500 meters with times of 4:43.58 and 4:48.17. Kristin Zarrella was first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.58.
Adriana Allen ran a time of 54.55 in the 400 meters in claiming the event champion while teammate Taylor Outland finished sixth with a time of 59.53. Jazmyne Gilliam was third in the 100 meters with a time of 12.08 and LaSpencia Brown finishes seventh with a time of 12.16. Brown also finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.66.
Talia Thompson ran a time of 1:03.63 in the 400 meter hurdles to place third.
Trista Barry finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.60m (5-3) while LaDaeshia Davis was eighth with a jump of 1.55m (5-1). Ashley Grillot placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 31.59m (103-8). Sharday Branch finished second in the long jump with a mark of 5.64m (18-6) and Davis was sixth with a jump of 5.15m (16-10.75).
Three Golden Eagles placed in the top eight in the 100 meters with Robert Wells finishing third with a time of 10.89 while Cory Miller was fourth with a time of 10.96 and Jamad Smith was sixth with a time of 11.00. Wells, then, took the top spot in the 200 meters with a time of 21.66. Miller was third with a time of 21.88.
The 4x100 relay team captured the event title with a time of 40.37 while the 4x400 relay ran a time of 3:13.59 for first place.
Courtland Wells finishes second in the high jump with a jump of 2.06m (6-9). Chad Cook was second in the long jump with a jump of 6.86m (22-6.25), Jamar Sims was third with a mark of 6.85m (22-5.75) and Christopher Monroe finished in the tie for fourth with a jump of 6.73m (22-1).
Ethan Rich placed second in the javelin with a throw of 62.22m (204-2).
The Golden Eagles are back in action on May 2 at the Jace LaCoste Invitational hosted by Mississippi State.
