Southern Miss Track and Field Send Three Events to the Podium on the First Day of C-USA Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Miss men’s and women’s Track and Field team picked up three podium visits and a school record during the first day of C-USA Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Nadia Maffo got the gold today in the women’s weight throw with a throw of 20.35m. Caleb Parker was the first to visit the podium with a silver medal in the men’s high jump and the women’s distance medley relay also captured silver with a time of 11:43.43.
“We picked up picked points from Caleb Parker in the high jump and the women’s DMR, said head coach Jon Stuart. “The big highlight came from Nadia Maffo winning the weight throw. Danisha Jones led the competition early and had a good finish in fourth.”
Donald Daley finished fourth in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 19.17m and John Warren came in eighth scoring a point for the men in the long jump.
McKinely West improved on his school record time in the 200m today with a time of 21.12. West along with Cra’vorkian Carson and Alexander Richemond qualified for the men’s 200m. West, Carson and Chedlin Sagesse also qualified in the men’s 60m.
“We have finalist in almost every event tomorrow, and we hope to pile up some points by the end of the competition,” continued Stuart.
Joining the sprinter in the finals tomorrow, on the men’s side, is Caleb Parker in the 60m hurdles. On the women’s side, Keiyana Gaskin qualified in both the 60m and 200m, Chenelle Ricketts and Rian Robinson in the 400m, Courtney Filliben in the 800m, Kate Mattox and Regen McGee in the mile are all set to run in finals.
The competition starts back up on Sunday with the heptathlon starting in the morning, followed by the remaining field events and concluding with the running finals beginning at 1 p.m. CT. ESPN3 live coverage will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
