BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss men and women's track and field teams concluded competition at the Birmingham Ice Breaker Meet on Thursday. The Golden Eagles finished strong with 19 athletes in the top five in 17 events including four first-place finishes.
Highlighting the meet was senior Tori Bowie who captured the long jump title with a mark of 6.17m (20-3) while winning the 200 meters with a time of 24.44. Redshirt senior Ke'Airra Jones placed second in the high jump with a height of 1.79m (5-10.50), then followed with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 12.33 (40-05.50).
Sophomore Rachel Polk took first in the shot put with a throw of 14.28m (46-10.25). Junior Robert Collingwood placed first in the men's shot with a throw of 17.02m (55-10.25) while his twin brother Richard finished second with a throw of 15.49m (50-10).
Sarah Omotayo placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.68.
Junior Justin Sims ran a time of 6.72 in the 60-meter dash and finished in second place. Jamal Young was second in the 400 meters with a time of 48.53. Freshman Courtland Wells placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.41. Senior Julien Bousquet recorded a time of 4:19.61 in the one-mile to finish second.
Marcus Norwood was one of three Golden Eagles placing in the top five in the high jump with a second-place finish with a height of 2.05m (6-8.75) followed by Wells in third-place with a mark of 2.02m (6-7.50) and freshman Matt Blank in fifth with a jump of 1.93m (6-4). Norwood posted a fourth-place performance in the long jump with a jump of 7.02m (23-00.50) while Jonathan Ruffin was fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.36m (43-10).
The 4x400-meter relay team placed second with a time of 3:20.52.
The Golden Eagles' next competition will be on Jan. 14 at the Crimson Tide Invitational.
