Softball Loses 5-1 Decision Against Troy

HATTIESBURG, Miss.--At the Southern Miss Softball Complex on Friday night, the Southern Miss softball team (15-13, 0-7 Sun Belt) suffered a 5-1 defeat against Troy (24-9-1, 5-1-1 Sun Belt) to start the weekend.
D'Aunn Riggs, Troy's left fielder, launched an early onslaught in the top of the first inning with a triple to right center. Libby Baker, the first baseman, would then drive her home with a single through the left side.
With two outs in the top of the first, the Trojan bases were loaded for the only time of the game, but Morgan Leinstock would leave them stranded with a strikeout looking.
Trojan center fielder Jade Sinness made an outstanding leap to catch a ball about to fly out of the park in the bottom of the first, preventing Hannah Borden from hitting her fifth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the second, Jana Lee hit her third home run of the season to right field, scoring the only run for the Golden Eagles.
With Anslee Finch's sacrifice fly, Taylor McKinney raced home to score in the top of the third. As we headed into the top of the fourth, a single through the left side from shortstop Audra Thompson would set the Trojans up for success when Kennedi Gaton knocked a two-run home run to left center.Â
Troy kept their bats going in the top of the fifth as first baseman Libby Baker hit a home run to center field to increase the Trojan advantage to 5-1.
A double play in the top of the sixth refused the Trojan runner on third to advance the score. Center fielder Jade Sinness grounded out to first base, and Natalie Taylor acted fast and threw to Hannah Borden at home.Â
Pitchers Morgan Leinstock and Jana Lee appeared in tonight's matchup. Together, the two pitched seven innings, striking out seven batters. In the sixth inning, Lee replaced Leinstock and pitched to the end of the contest. She gave up no runs before the competition was over. Ultimately, the Trojans won, and Leinstock suffered her 10th defeat of the year.
