Softball Defeats Yale in Six Innings

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (9-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) kicked off day one of the Hub City Challenge with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Yale (0-2, 0-0 Ivy) for their first match-up in program history.
In the top of the second, Morgan Leinstock pitched her 300th career strikeout in the Black & Gold.
Bases were loaded as a result of Hannah Borden's double in the bottom of the third. Pinch runner Natalie Hurdle soon replaced Borden. The Golden Eagles were in a position to score as left fielder Lorna Agren tripled to right center, bringing Natalie Taylor, Alexis Dittmer, and Hurdle home for three RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth, Borden hit her second double of the ballgame, and Taylor then flew out to left field, allowing Borden to score and extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 4-0. With two outs and a full count, freshman Kinsley Gordon, who had replaced Paris Ferguson in the lineup, blasted her first home run of the season to left field for a three-run shot.
With a full count and bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Kinsley Gordon walked, leading Dittmer home for a run-rule victory after six innings.
Gordon recorded the most RBIs for the afternoon match-up with four, and Lorna Agren trailed right behind her with three.
Leinstock (4-1) secured the victory by striking out eight batters, only allowing five hits and zero runs.
Southern Miss will play a doubleheader tomorrow with a rematch against Yale at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. match-up against UAPB.
