HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Old Dominion used a three-run fifth inning to come from behind and defeat No. 7 Southern Miss 4-3 at Pete Taylor Park Saturday afternoon to clinch a Conference USA series.
The Golden Eagles (35-12 overall, 17-6 C-USA) will look to salvage the final game of the series, Sunday, with an 11 a.m. start.
Down 3-1 after four innings, the Monarchs (31-12, 13-10) bunched four straight hits together with two outs to give themselves the lead that they did not relinquish. Back-to-back singles from Thomas Wheeler and Kenny Levari started the rally. Matt Coutney then doubled off the left centerfield wall to tie the score before scoring a batter later on an Andy Garriola infield single to knock in the final run off Golden Eagle starter Hunter Riggins.
Riggins allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings, giving up eight hits and fanning three to suffer the loss and fall to 5-4.
The Golden Eagles scored the game's first run in the opening frame. The first three batters walked to open the home team's first and Gabe Montenegro scored on a Christopher Sargent double play.
ODU then tied the score in the second on a play at the plate that catcher Rodrigo Montenegro tried to apply the tag but was ruled to have miss on the attempt, allowing the run to score.
Southern Miss then took its only other lead on a two-run homer from Slade Wilks in the fourth on his seventh round-tripper of the campaign.
Both relievers for each team were then unhittable down the stretch.
ODU pitcher Jacob Gomez tossed the final 4 1/3 frames in relief of starter Nick Pantos and limited the Golden Eagles to a hit and two walks with six strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 3-1.
Dalton Rogers, who came in for Riggins, retired nine of 10 batters he faced. Rogers whiffed a career-best eight and allowed one walk down the stretch.
The Golden Eagles tried to tie the score in the ninth as they opened the final frame with a pinch-hit double from Blake Johnson. After a sacrifice bunt by Rodrigo Montenegro and a walk to his brother Gabe, Dustin Dickerson grounded into a double play to end the game.
