MIAMI – Carson Paetow and Reece Ewing each drove in a pair of runs and Tanner Hall pitched 7 1/3 strong innings to lead No. 11 Southern Miss over FIU, 5-3, in a Conference USA series opener Thursday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (25-8 overall, 11-2 C-USA) won for the seventh-straight contest and for the 15th time over the last 17 games. Southern Miss, which also won its nation's leading eighth consecutive road contest, is 5-0 on its current stretch of playing eight-of-nine games away from Pete Taylor Park.
Hall limited the Panthers (11-21, 4-9) to three runs (two earned) on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 6-0. Landon Harper gave up a double but retired the other five batters he faced over the final 1 2/3 with a pair of strikeouts to earn his team-leading sixth save.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring with a solo run in the third. Gabe Montenegro, who had a team-high three hits, opened the inning with a walk. After a wild pitch, a groundout moved him to third before Paetow knocked him in with a sacrifice fly.
Robert Sotolongo tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single from the Panthers.
Southern Miss then took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fifth. Danny Lynch, who added two hits, opened the frame with a single. After Will McGillis was hit by a pitch, Montenegro reached on a bunt back to the pitcher who fell after fielding the ball allowing him to reach by single. Paetow, and then Ewing, singled to right to each drive in a run to extend the advantage to 3-1.
Dustin Dickerson posted an RBI single and Ewing added a sacrifice fly in a two-run seventh to complete the visitor's scoring.
FIU cut into the gap by scoring solo runs in the seventh and eighth frames, but Harper worked around that one-out ninth-inning double to end the contest.
Zac Lampton, the second of six FIU pitchers, suffered the loss as he allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Southern Miss posted 11 hits in the contest, as Paetow, Dickerson and Ewing all added two hits apiece.
Game two of the series will take place Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
