Steve Gortmaker is in his second season on Mark Smith's strength and conditioning staff, where he will assist in all areas of the Golden Eagle strength program.
Prior to joining the Golden Eagles, Gortmaker spent four seasons at Tennessee where he served as the Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning. Gortmaker, a former Oklahoma defensive back, also spent four seasons on coach Steve Spurrier's staff at South Carolina from 2004 to 2008.
Before his time in Columbia, Gortmaker worked with Smith at Kansas from 2002 to 2004 on coach Mark Mangino's staff. He also spent time in Bowling Green, Ky., as a member of the strength staff on legendary coach Jack Harbaugh's squad at Western Kentucky from 2001 to 2002. While at Western, the Hilltoppers advanced to the 2001 1-AA Playoffs.
Gortmaker also spent time as a strength coach at his alma mater from 1999 to 2001. The Sooners won the 2000 AP National Championship and the Big XII championship during his time with the program.
The White Deer, Texas native is a 1998 graduate of OU and earned Academic All-Big XII honors. He is married to the former Brooke Martin of Irmo, South Carolina.
