Melissa Chastang joined the Southern Miss Sports Medicine staff in 2013 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and was over Women's Basketball. Following the 2015 season she moved to Football and Men's and Women's Golf. Chastang was promoted to Associate Athletic Trainer in the summer of 2015. 

In addition to her duties, Chastang serves as the Purchasing and Budget Coordinator for the Southern Miss Sports Medicine Department. Among these other duties Chastang serves as an instructor and preceptor for the USM Athletic Training Program.

Chastang has a Masters Degree in Science and Health and Human Performance from the University of North Alabama. While completing her Graduate Assistant Position at UNA she was responsible for the women’s softball team and assisted with football. At this time Chastang also served as a strength and condition intern, designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs for the UNA softball and baseball teams, while assisting with the daily maintenance and upkeep of the strength and conditioning facility.

As a Satsuma, Ala., native, Chastang earned a Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training with a Minor in Sports and Exercise Psychology from the University of West Florida in 2010. While completing her bachelor’s degree, Chastang competed as a member of the varsity softball team, earning all-conference and all-academic honors.

Chastang is a Nationally Certified Athletic Trainer, Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, National Strength and Conditioning Association, Mississippi Athletic Trainers Association, as well as holding a current Professional Rescuer Certification from the American Heart Association.
