Katie Barker began her tenure at Southern Miss in 2009 as a graduate assistant for the Sports Medicine Department. In 2012, she was promoted to Assistant Athletic Trainer. Barker is responsible for the Golden Eagles Women’s Soccer Team.
In addition to her duties as Assistant Athletic Trainer for Women’s Soccer, Barker serves as the director of the annual Student Athletic Trainer Workshop, held every summer in June by the USM Sports Medicine Department. She also serves as a preceptor and instructor for the USM Athletic Training Program.
Prior to holding her current position, Barker served as an interim assistant athletic trainer for the Lady Eagles Basketball program from 2011-2013. As a graduate assistant at Southern Miss from 2009-2011, Barker assisted with the football, cross country, and track and field programs. She also served as head athletic trainer for the Brett Favre 7-on-7 Elite Camp (2010, 2011), softball camps, and the USM club rugby games.
As a native of Pensacola, Fl., Barker completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from the University of West Florida in 2009. While there, she worked with the Argonauts women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball and club rugby teams. Barker completed her Masters Degree in Sports Coaching Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2011 and is currently concluding her Doctorate of Philosophy from Southern Miss in Higher Education Administration, with an emphasis in Human Performance and Recreation, specifically Athletic Training Program Administration.
Barker is a Nationally Certified Athletic Trainer. She is a certified American Red Cross Professional Rescuer and Layperson First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor. Barker is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Mississippi Athletic Trainers Association.
