I hope all our donors and fans our enjoying a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving weekend!
Our Golden Eagles are having its best football seasons since 1988. With the win over UTEP on Oct. 29, it secured our 18th consecutive winning season and we will participate in our 10th consecutive bowl game and 14 out of the last 15 years. Our 9-2 start is the best since the 1988 team that finished with a 10-2 record. No team in Southern Miss history has won 11 games in our history of playing football and it is still within reach. Only two teams have won 10 games, the 1952 and 1988 teams. A win over Memphis this weekend would make Southern Miss the C-USA East Division Champions and we would play either at Houston or Tulsa for the league title. Our men's basketball season is off to a good start (3-1) with wins over Spring Hill, Colorado State and Cal-Irvine and a narrow loss at Denver. The team will face New Mexico State tonight in the semifinals of the prestigious Great Alaska Shootout. We continue to sell basketball season tickets and they can be purchased online at SouthernMissTickets.com or calling the ticket office at 1-800-844-TICK (8425). We have one of our most attractive non-conference home schedules in December, including Ole Miss, South Florida, Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State.
Our Lady Eagle basketball team will host its annual Classic this weekend facing Jacksonville State tonight at 5:30. The other two teams are Georgia Southern and Stephen F. Austin. The Consolation game will be Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by the Championship game at 7 p.m., after the football game.
Conference realignment talk has slowed down in recent weeks. As you know, Pitt and Syracuse left the Big East for the ACC and West Virginia is leaving the Big East to go to the Big 12. Missouri has announced their intentions to leave the Big 12 and head to the SEC. UCF, Houston and SMU have been invited to join the Big East. The future of conference realignment depends on where Air Force, Boise State and Navy will affiliate themselves. C-USA and the MWC continue to work on the football alliance between the two leagues. On the BCS front, there is a major move to do away with the automatic qualifying position for the conferences and completely revamp the system beginning with the next four-year cycle starting in 2014. A revamped system should make it an even playing field for all 122 NCAA Division I playing football institutions. We will continue to fight for the right of our student-athletes to be able to play on the highest level of NCAA Division I postseason play.
Since the Golden Eagles are bowl-eligible, we recently mailed all the bowl options and ticket packages to our fans. I encourage all of our great fans to make plans to join the Golden Eagles this bowl season. We should know more in the next 10-days where the Eagles will land in the bowl picture.
Thank you for your continued support of Southern Miss athletics and we look forward to seeing you for Senior Day when the Golden Eagles host Memphis tomorrow. This year's "Black and Blue Bowl" will be a phenomenal way to send out our 21 senior football student-athletes. This will also be Mississippi Education Day, as we invite students from all over our state to enjoy the atmosphere of a college football game.
This has been a special year for Southern Miss football and we sincerely hope you will show your appreciation to the student-athletes and coaches and join us for the Memphis game! We need to win this game to guarantee a spot in the C-USA Championship game and we need you at "The Rock" to be Loud and Proud and help us to victory. Always remember your GOLDEN EAGLE PRIDE!
