The past several weeks have brought deeply emotional events to our Southern Miss family, with the death of Southern Miss golfer Lauren Judson's parents in a plane crash and the incident after the UCF football victory involving student-athletes Tim Green, Deddrick Jones and Martez Smith. As we approach Thanksgiving, we are truly thankful for the love that surrounds the Golden Eagle athletics program and its family. The love shown Lauren, Tim, Deddrick and Martez by their teammates, coaches, staff, friends, Southern Miss fans and the entire community has been extraordinary. The leadership displayed in managing the situations by Dr. Saunders and Coaches Julie Gallop and Larry Fedora were incredible. Everyone coming together to handle the situation and show the love and caring for the effected individuals makes be prouder of the Golden Eagles than any victory our teams could earn on the fields of competition.
I also want to thank all our football team and fans and congratulate them for the great football win over Houston. Although we suffered adversity at the end of the first half when an attempted field goal was blocked and returned for a score, our team and fans came back in the second half stronger than ever. Our fans did not scatter and in the second half their noise and unwavering support gave our team the energy to be successful.
It's great to be 8-3 at this time of year, be assured of our 17th consecutive winning/bowl eligible season and headed to our ninth straight and 13th bowl in the last 14 years. Very few football powers can match those accomplishments. Our record will also assure us of a bowl game this year at a new destination. Once again, Austin Davis was named the Rivals.com Player of the Week and also received the same honor from C-USA. Danny Hrapmann, kicked another field goal and continues to lead the nation in his specialty, is sixth in the nation in total points scored and is one of three finalists for the Lou Goza National Kicker of the Year award. The goal of this football team now is to win 10-games this season and they are on a mission to see that become a reality.
We are truly excited about the coming weeks. We have two and possibly three football games remaining and our men's and women's basketball teams are getting into high gear. We know you will continue to support our student-athletes and demonstrate that the Golden Eagle Nation has the best fans in the country. Your love for the program has certainly shone brightly in the last few weeks.
Happy Thanksgiving and thank you so much for all you do for Southern Miss athletics.
