This week's Golden Eagle Player of the Week is Golden Eagle redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Davis.
The 6-foot-2, 206 Meridian, Miss. native led the Golden Eagles during their assault on the Southern Miss record books Saturday, Nov. 1, in a 70-14 rout of Conference USA rival UAB.
The Golden Eagles' 70 points are the most ever scored in a Conference USA game, and it is also the highest point total at M.M. Roberts Stadium, and tied for the second highest in school history.
Davis accounted for 222 total yards, 141 yards through the air and 81 on the ground, in just over two-quarters of play on Saturday. As a team, the Eagles tallied 610 total yards.
During the Eagles' second possession of the game, Davis connected with freshman receiver DeAndre Brown on a 60-yard pass. The pass was Davis' 16th touchdown, setting a new Southern Miss freshman record, surpassing Brett Favre's 15 touchdown passes in 1987.
He also set a school record with five rushing touchdowns.
For the year, Davis has completed 187 of 330 passes for 2,213 yards, a freshman record at Southern Miss. He has thrown 16 touchdowns passes while only being intercepted 7 times and has added eight touchdowns on the ground.
Davis and the Golden Eagles head to Orlando, Fla., this weekend to take on C-USA rival UCF at Brighthouse Networks Stadium, Saturday, Nov. 8. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m
