Nov. 1, 2011
Fall weather has hit Hattiesburg and our Golden Eagles are having one of the best seasons we have had. With the win over UTEP, we have secured our 18th consecutive winning season and will participate in our 10th bowl in as many years and 14 out of the last 15. After the SMU victory, we moved into the National Rankings for the first time since 2004. Our 7-1 start is the beginning to our season since 1996. The winner of our televised football game at East Carolina this weekend will receive the edge on the race to the C-USA Championship Game for the East Division.
Looking ahead to the UCF home football game on Nov. 12, it is Military Appreciation Day and we will honor all of those who have served and continue to serve this great country. We are offering ticket deals to all active, retired, and reserve Military and have reached out to numerous military bases around the state inviting the servicemen and women to attend the game free through the donated tickets program, courtesy of our great sponsors, fans, and ticket holders. We will also honor and induct Adalius Thomas into the Legends Club, recognize our foundation board members, our newest members of the Circle of Champions and have a special Army parachute jump team perform at halftime to salute our military.
We are asking all our Golden Eagle Fans to show their Golden Eagle Pride and wear Black, White, and Gold at "The Rock" against UCF. Fans sitting on the East side of the stadium are asked to wear Black, while those individuals seated in the South End Zone are asked to wear White, and for the West side, we are asking fans to wear Gold. This has a chance to make Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium look amazing for a national TV audience; however, we need your help!
Our men's basketball season got off to a great start in exhibition play as we defeated Loyola, 88-53, last Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum. We continue to sell basketball season tickets and they can be purchased online at SouthernMissTickets.com or calling the ticket office at 1-800-844-TICK (8425). We have one of our most attractive home schedules in years, including Ole Miss. Our Lady Eagle basketball team begins their season against West Alabama in exhibition play on Monday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
Conference realignment continues to be the talk of college athletics. As you know, West Virginia is leaving the Big East to go to the Big 12. Missouri is expected to leave the Big 12 and head to the SEC. Media comments suggest UCF, Houston and SMU will be invited to join the Big East. A lot of the Big East future depends on where Air Force, Boise State and Navy will affiliate themselves. C-USA and the MWC continue to work on the football alliance between the two leagues and our conference has additional contingency plans. We will continue to fight for the right of our student-athletes to be able to play on the highest level of NCAA Division I postseason play.
Volleyball returns home this Friday and Saturday against SMU with both matches starting at 7 p.m. We currently hold 8th place, however, if we can sweep SMU this weekend, we have a chance to move into the top half of the league standings.
CBS Sports Network has been highlighting and following the football team for the UTEP game and will continue to follow the team for the ECU game and as well as the week of the UCF contest. This is a great show and really highlights the football team, the athletic department, and our great University. The show goes behind the scenes and gives the viewer access that most people never have a chance to view including the team's practices, study hall, workouts, travel schedules, and inside the locker room. This is great exposure for Southern Miss as you will not want to miss the shows. They will be shown on CBS Sports Network on Mon., at 6:30 p.m., on Nov. 7, for the East Carolina week and then on Mon., Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., chronicling the UCF week. Since the Golden Eagles are bowl eligible, our staff is currently working very hard on bowl preparations and ticket packages for our fans and those should be released within the next week or so. I encourage all of our great fans to make plans to join the Golden Eagles this bowl season.
Thank you for your continued support of Southern Miss athletics and we look forward to seeing you at the UCF game on Nov. 12. Remember your "Golden Eagle Pride" and wear your Gold, Black or White!
