Saturday, October 30, will be "Halloween at the Rock" as the Eagles host UAB and with a rare 11 a.m. kickoff in our annual "Blackout" game. This game shapes up to be a key matchup for both teams, and the Eagles will need our fans back in black, cheering loud and proud.
The 5-2 Eagles are coming off a much-needed open date and hopefully will have a number of injured payers back into the line-up. With a win Saturday, the Eagles would become bowl eligible and remain near the top of Conference USA standings. A victory would also provide momentum as the Eagles play road games the next two weeks.
The visiting Blazers, in spite of their 2-5 record, have proven rather unpredictable and will be looking to dish out a Halloween trick Saturday afternoon. UAB defeated UTEP when the Miners were "hot" in conference play, and the Blazers have been very impressive in road games against SEC foes Tennessee and Mississippi State. While both games were losses, Tennessee needed overtime to win in Knoxville, and the MSU-UAB game was not decided in Starkville until the final seconds. With five games remaining, the Blazers can still become bowl eligible, thus they will be ready to play hard on Saturday. Our team definitely remembers the score of the game last year.
Saturday's "blackout" game is one of only two remaining Southern Miss home games and, as always, it is critical for our fans to create the excitement and enthusiasm that has made the Rock one of the most difficult places to play. The weather should be great, and the early kickoff will afford everyone plenty of time to make their Halloween activities later in the day. Our fans also have the opportunity of becoming creative when it comes time for the food at their tailgate events. Let's make sure we are celebrating an Eagle victory! See you there!
