Southern Miss SAAC Pioneers Voter Registration Drive

Sept. 29, 2016 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is making strong headway toward empowering collegiate students to exercise their right to vote. The Golden Eagles have announced a voter registration drive on Monday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the front and back entrance to the Duff Athletic Center.

The purpose of the campaign is to register college students, especially student-athletes, to vote during the 2016 general election. Students will receive information regarding the voting process (e.g., deadlines to register, early voting, absentee process, etc.) in their state as well as registering to vote in Mississippi, if they choice to do so. As a student organization on campus, this will provide all students with the opportunity to learn about the American voting process.

“This will provide students the opportunity to learn about our democratic system, and for some, this will be the first time they will be voting for a President," Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA and SAAC advisor Sonya Varnell said. "We want our student-athletes’ college experience to be more than sports. College is about learning and growing inside and outside of the classroom.”

The subcommittee responsible for implementing the drive include Kirk McCarty (chair, baseball), Kierstin Bradley (soccer), Megan Brown (women’s basketball), ChaoYu Huang (men’s tennis), Alexandra Kitchen (women’s tennis), Nick Mullens (football), and Tyler Sarrazin (football).

Under the leadership of senior Danielle Block, SAAC President, they are also planning a Political Forum in collaboration with the Young Democrats and Young Republicans next month as well. For additional information, please contact Sonya Varnell at
