HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini announced today the promotion of Jack Duggan to Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations.
"We are pleased and excited to promote Jack to our number one media relations spot," said Giannini. "Jack has great experience, is very qualified and was highly recommended by our staff, coaches and the media that cover Southern Miss athletics."
Duggan replaced Mike Montoro, who recently accepted a position as Sports Information Director for football at West Virginia University.
Duggan joined the Athletic Media Relations staff as an associate director on Aug. 1, 2006, and handled the day-to-day publicity for the men's basketball and men's and women's golf programs during the last academic year.
"It is an honor for me to follow the three people that have previously held this position - Ace Cleveland, Regiel Napier and Mike Montoro," Duggan said. "The incredible job that those individuals did in promoting Southern Miss Athletics will help motivate me in my efforts in continuing the first-rate service that has been provided over the years to not only our local media, but also regional and national."
Duggan came to Southern Miss after serving as the Sports Information and Media Relations Director at The University of New Orleans for three years. He supervised the media relations operation for the 15-sport athletics department with major emphasis on men's basketball and baseball. He oversaw the department's website, produced media guides and event programs for each of the department's sports and facilitated media coverage.
This past summer Duggan was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America with the Bob Esposito Backbone Award. The award goes to a CoSIDA member who displays sound judgment and unusual courage in guiding their institution through difficult public relations situations. Duggan, who was recognized for his efforts at UNO the year following Hurricane Katrina, was honored along with former Tulane Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Donna Turner.
Prior to that, he spent time as the Media Relations Manager of the Huntsville Flight of the NBA Developmental League (2002-03), the Associate Sports Information Director at UAB (2000-01), the Assistant Director (1995-98) and the Sports Information Director (1998-2000) at Nicholls State and the Assistant Sports Information Director at Southeastern Louisiana (1993-95).
Duggan graduated from Southern Miss in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in accounting and earned his master's degree in sport administration here in 1991. While a student at Southern Miss, he was a member of the baseball team, before moving into media relations, serving as a student assistant and then as a graduate assistant.
Duggan, and his wife, Hilary, have twin daughters, Betty and Mary-Margaret.
