Here we go again with conference realignment! BYU is expected to drop out of the Mountain West (MWC) and may go independent or join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in all sports except football. Nevada-Reno and Fresno State are leaving the WAC to join the MWC. Just when we all thought expansion or realignment would take a back seat for several months to a year, the rumors and possible scenarios are running rampant.
I do not think the latest news, if it unfolds as expected; will have an effect on C-USA. At the end of the day, however, it should make C-USA the strongest BCS-non-qualifier conference. Playing musical chairs and the in-fighting going on in the MWC and WAC is not good for those mountain-west coast programs and both leagues will suffer.
I continue to say, our goals are always to play at the highest level of NCAA Division I athletics, work daily to have the best possible athletic program, win championships and graduate our student-athletes.
Good things are happening at Southern Miss. The recent purchase of ISP by IMG and CBS College Sports' new association with Comcast are two very positive events for the Golden Eagles.
We are excited that our fall athletic season starts next Friday, August 27 as our soccer and volleyball teams host competition and our football team travels to South Carolina for its nationally televised football game on ESPN, Thursday night, September 2.
