HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Misses Dance Team and Seymour represented Southern Miss at the Universal Dance Association camp in Tuscaloosa, Ala., held July 24-26th.
They were both representing The University of Southern Mississippi in competition with other universities' dance squads and mascot teams. Both squads also went through training sessions and practices with the other universities to help them prepare for the upcoming academic year by sharing ideas and routines.
Both the Southern Miss and Seymour took home awards. The Southern Misses earned the camp's most improved trophy, another for their fight song routine, and a superior trophy for their performance of the camp routines that were learned throughout the weekend. Also five members from the Southern Misses dance team were asked to join the UDA staff and teach and coach at similar UDA camps.
Southern Misses coach Jennifer Centola said of the experience, "I was so proud for the girls to bond and work with the other teams and make a huge impression at this event. We are hoping to practice really hard throughout the season and represent Southern Miss as best as we can during the year and at UDA Nationals in Orlando, Fla."
Seymour, competing against other mascots earned what some consider the camp's highest award, the Leadership Award, which is voted on by all participating mascot squads. The squads vote for the mascot team they would most like to be a part of instead of their own team. The members of the Seymour squad are; Lacey Blankenship, Daniel Dir, and Shane Hoes.
