Giannini Announces Athletic Staff Reorganization

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini has announced the reorganization of the athletic staff and the responsibility changes that correspond with each position. The reorganization includes 10 title promotions, responsibility changes and the addition of one new staff member.

The changes were made after the departure of former Deputy Director of Athletics David Hansen to UCF and will be effective July 1. Hansen served the department of athletics since 1999 and has already started his current position.

"I am excited about the reorganization of our administrative team," Giannini said. "We have top notch individuals who have great work ethic and leadership skills. The reorganization within the department will make it operate more efficiently. Diane Stark, who worked for me at Louisiana-Monroe as well as in the sports marketing business, will join us. She does an excellent job and has great experience. We already have outstanding administrators on our staff, so it will make for a smooth transition."

Scott Carr, the former Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs, has been promoted to Deputy Director of Athletics/External Affairs. He will continue to oversee the areas of marketing and promotions, sports broadcasting, development and community relations and media relations. He will now serve as the sport administrator for the sport of baseball and will oversee the athletic department's capital projects.

Sonya Varnell will continue to serve as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Olympic Sports and Senior Woman Administrator. She also will direct and monitor the department's gender and minority equity plans, as well as coordinate fundraising efforts for the women's sport programs. She serves as the sport administrator for women's basketball, softball, soccer, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and volleyball.

Don Oberhelman, the former Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services, has been promoted to Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services. He oversees the areas of academics, life skills, sports medicine and strength and conditioning. He will now serve as the sport administrator for men's basketball.

Diane Stark joins the athletic staff as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs. She will serve as the department's chief financial officer and will handle the planning, developing and administration of the department's business operations and oversee the ticket office, facilities and game management, equipment and video operations.

She returns to athletics after working in the private business sector since 2003 and as the associate registrar at Louisiana-Monroe from 2001-03. Stark was the Associate Athletic Director at Louisiana-Monroe from 1994-01, working with Giannini while he was Director of Athletics for most of that time.

During her time at ULM, her duties included serving as the administrator for the men's and women's Olympic sports, directing the budgets for 14 sports, evaluating and hiring coaches, directing the department's marketing and promotional efforts, developing and administrating sponsorship packages, providing grant monies for the NCAA/National Youth Sports Program and NCAA/Girls Sports Clinics and administrating the program and serving on various department and university committees.

Prior to her time in Monroe, she worked at two Charlotte, N.C., based Sports Marketing and Television companies, one of which is now owned by ESPN. Her responsibilities included creating, producing and implementing corporate marketing and sponsorship packages and handling all aspects of media and public relations. She also served as the director of scheduling and traffic, which included designing event formats, supervising department personnel and devising broadcast schedules.

From 1987-89, she served as the assistant to the executive director of the FedEx Orange Bowl, was the assistant to the commissioner of the Metro Conference from 1983-87 and was the assistant to the track and baseball coaches and University fundraising groups at Nebraska. Stark is a 1983 graduate of Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Shane Coghlan, the former Assistant Director of Athletics for Ticket Operations, has been promoted to Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs and will oversee the department's ticket operations, as well as game management and donor fulfillment.

John Miller, the former Assistant Director of Athletics for Football Operations, has been promoted to Associate Director of Athletics for Football Operations and Development and Mike Montoro, the former Assistant Director of Athletics for Media Relations, has been promoted to Associate Director of Athletics for Media Relations. Dick Vogel, the Executive Director of the Eagle Club, has been promoted to Associate Director of Athletics/Executive Director of the Eagle Club.

Greg Herring, the former Director of Marketing and Promotions, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Marketing and Promotions. He will now oversee the collegiate licensing program and the area of corporate and group ticket sales.

Jane Massengale, the former Business Manager, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Business Operations, Todd McCall, the former Director of Sports Medicine, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine and Patrick Stewart, the former Head Equipment Manager, has been promoted to Director of Equipment Operations.
