HATTIESBURG, Miss - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini announced Friday the hiring of Brent Jones as the Associate Athletic Director of Communications. The hiring is subject to approval by the IHL Board of Supervisors.
"As a former student-athlete and with all his experience at the institutional level, Brent Jones will make a difference in our marketing and communications department," Giannini said. "Brent comes fully prepared to step into the role of Associate Athletic Director for Communications having a master's in higher education and an extensive background in athletics."
Jones comes to Southern Miss after spending the last five years at Georgia Southern, first as the Director of Eagle Sports Marketing and then as Assistant Athletic Director of Eagle Sports Marketing.
His efforts oversaw the marketing, sponsorship, advertising and promotional aspects for all 15 of Georgia Southern's intercollegiate athletic programs as well as directed all Junior Eagle Club memberships, corporate tailgates, and the selling of VIP suite and luxury boxes at their football stadium.
Some of his highlights there included raising $8 million in external funding through sponsorships, VIP suites, ticket sales and corporate trade outs. In addition, he secured the top three largest corporate sponsorships in the history of the GSU athletics program as well helped increase football season ticket revenue by 100 percent over that span.
Prior to his stint at GSU, Jones worked as the Director of Game Day Operations for Rebel Sports Marketing at Ole Miss for a year.
Jones is a former collegiate baseball player, who played one season at Augusta State, before transferring to Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga., where he received his undergraduate degree in History and Secondary Education in May of 2004.
Jones replaces Kirstin Rayborn, who left earlier this spring for a position at Florida State University. Jones begins his duties at the University on June 1.
