Southern Miss Cheer Places 4th at NCA Collegiate Championship
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss Cheerleaders recently competed in the NCA Collegiate Championships held in Daytona Beach, Fla. It marked the first time that the group competed at the NCA Collegiate Championship and the Golden Eagles made a statement with their performance.
Competing in the Intermediate Small Coed I Division, the team competed against the likes of SMU, Missouri, North Texas and East Carolina among others. Teams were judged within several categories including tumbling, partner stunts, pyramids, baskets, jumps, choreography, degree of difficulty, overall effect and more.
Only 10 teams advanced to the finals of the Championship and Southern Miss was one of those such teams. In the finals, the Southern Miss Cheerleaders turned in an impressive performance with an overall score of 85.15 which resulted in a 4th-place finish and with the team bringing a trophy back to Hattiesburg. SMU captured 1st place in the division with a final score of 89.05.
"This team made history by becoming the first Southern Miss Cheerleading Squad to compete at NCA College Nationals," said coach Dailee Papania. "We are so proud of our cheerleaders for their 4th place win, but most importantly, we are proud of their growth this season. We could not have asked for a better group to represent Southern Miss."
The Southern Miss Cheerleaders will not rest for long as tryouts will take place this upcoming weekend for the 2016-2017 Squad. Incoming or current students are welcome to tryout this Saturday and Sunday in Reed Green Coliseum.
