HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Athletics will hold its third annual workshop entitled "The Game Plan - Athletes Heading Toward Division I Eligibility" on its campus, Friday, April 13. The workshop will be held at the school's Athletic Center.
Designed for school counselors, high school coaches and athletic directors, as well as professionals working with 9th through 12th grade college-bound student-athletes, some of the topics that will be covered in the day-long workshop include NCAA Division I eligibility, changes in core course requirements, NCAA core GPA calculations/test score index and the increase in NCAA standards effective with current 11th-grade students.
"The response to the workshop has been overwhelming, and the good news is that we have seen an increase the last two years in the number of high school athletes in Mississippi meeting NCAA initial eligibility requirements," said Tracy Robinson, Director of Student Services, who has organized this event. "Our goal is to make sure that all professionals who oversee the academic plan of student-athletes are completely educated and understand the NCAA standards."
Dr. Hank Bounds, State Superintendent of Education, and Dr. Ennis Proctor, Executive Director of the MHSAA, are scheduled to participate in the program.
The workshop, which was limited to 120 participants, is filled to capacity with individuals scheduled to attend from all over the state of Mississippi.
