HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Cheer program will opens its doors for tryouts over two days on April 19 and 20 for the 2013-14 squads.
Tryouts will be held in Reed Green Coliseum with registration beginning at 4 p.m. and tryouts to follow at 5 p.m. on Friday, with Saturday's tryouts beginning at 10 a.m. If necessary, there will be a third day of tryouts on Sunday, April 21. Cuts will be determined based on the number of participants.
Those interested in trying out will need to supply their own water bottle, towels and cheer shoes. Proof of insurance and a completed tryout application are also required. Along with the application, there is a $35 application fee.
Participants should be able to tumble without a spotter and come dressed in their Black and Gold.
Tryouts for those interested in being Seymour will also be held on that Saturday. Registration for that portion begins at 10:00 a.m., also in Reed Green.
The opportunity is open to current Southern Miss students carrying a 2.0 cumulative GPA and a 2.0 GPA for the fall semester. Transfer students and incoming students must be accepted into the University prior to the tryouts.
Additionally, each contender must perform an improvisational skit with the mascot as dictated by the judges, while each mascot hopeful must pass an endurance test. This is primarily a cardiovascular test, but also gives each contender an idea of what football season is like. Each mascot hopeful will also go through a series of interviews.
Applicants must also turn in a tryout application, proof of medical insurance and a liability waiver before being allowed to tryout. The return information is printed on the tryout application. Tryouts for Seymour are held yearly; there is no tenure in the mascot program.
