Wrapping Up the Regular Season for Both Basketball Programs
Feb. 25, 2011
The Golden Eagle men's basketball team is currently sharing first place in C-USA with Memphis and UAB with three regular season games remaining with identical 9-4 league marks. This is only the second time in nearly 20-years that the Southern Miss basketball team has been in this position so close to the end of the season. A fast finish will mean a strong possibility of playing in the NCAA Basketball Tournament for the first time in 20 years since the 1990-91 season.
Coach Eustachy's team will finish the regular season with a game at UCF this Saturday, followed by the UAB game at home on Wednesday, March 2 and then will travel to Tulsa for its final road game on Saturday, March 5. The C-USA Tournament will be held in El Paso at UTEP, March 9-12. Southern Miss continues to lead the league in scoring and margin of victory as Gary Flowers is the league's leading scorer and D. J. Newbill is one of the top freshmen.
Perhaps the biggest game in Reed Green Coliseum history since the 2000-01 season, when Southern Miss beat South Florida to share the regular-season league championship with Cincinnati, will come next Wednesday night, March 2, when the Golden Eagles host UAB at 6 pm. The Blazers currently have the best RPI in C-USA, although the Eagles defeated them earlier in the season in Birmingham. If there was ever a game we needed the Southern Miss faithful to come out and support the Eagles, it will be the UAB game. Our home crowds have been much improved and our fans have truly become the 6th man, and have made a tremendous difference in our success. The more fans we have at the games and the louder they are, it truly gives our team the energy and spark to make it over the top. We need you there against UAB. If you have not seen us play, you will love the fast paced transition offense and our always mental and physical toughness on defense.
Please get your tickets early at the Ferlise Center or give them a call at 1-800-0844-TICK. We had long lines at the UCF, Memphis and UTEP games and you don't want to miss any of the action. Wear your Black and Gold, bring signs, be LOUD and PROUD and let's pack Reed Green!
