Southern Miss Looks to Get Back on Track at UTEP

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team looks to get back to its winning ways this Wednesday, Feb. 22, when it travels to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT.
Southern Miss and UTEP will meet for the 17th time on the hardwood, with UTEP holding an 11-5 advantage. In El Paso, the Miners lead 7-1 and have won the last seven. Last year, Southern Miss snapped a four-game losing streak UTEP, winning 64-51 in Hattiesburg.
Southern Miss enters Wednesday night's contest with a 22-5 record, and 9-3 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 73-71 defeat at Houston last Saturday.
Neil Watson led Southern Miss with a career-high 27 points on five three-pointers. Jonathan Mills recorded his second consecutive double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds.
Watson leads the team with 12.2 points per game. He is connecting on 86.9-percent of his free throws to lead Conference USA and is second in assists (4.6). LaShay Page is scoring 12.1 points. He also leads the league in minutes played (36.6), is third in three-pointers made (2.4) and is 10th in three-point field goal percentage (.359). Darnell Dodson is scoring 11.3 points while pulling down 4.7 rebounds.
Maurice Bolden is scoring 10.4 points while grabbing 5.4 rebounds. He is also 10th in the league with 1.2 blocks per game. Jonathan Mills is also scoring 9.4 points and is 15th in the conference with 5.9 rebounds.
As a team, Southern Miss is scoring 72.3 points and is allowing just 63.7. The Golden Eagles are hitting 42.1-percent of their shots and 36.5% of their three-pointers. Their opposition is connecting on 43.3% from the field and 34.5-percent from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles hold the advantage on the boards, as they are outrebounding their opponents 36.6-to-32.0, a difference of 4.6 per game, good for third on Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are also leading the league in free throw percentage (.757).
Head coach Larry Eustachy is in his eighth season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He has compiled a 139-109 (.560) record during his time as head coach. In 21 years, Eustachy has an overall record of 399-254 (.611).
UTEP comes into Wednesday night's game with a 13-13 record, 6-6 in C-USA. The Miners are on a three-game winning streak after defeating Memphis, 60-58, Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore guard Michael Perez led UTEP with 15 points. Junior guard Jacques Street scored 14 points and senior forward Gabriel McCulley added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Miners are led by Perez with 12.2 points. McCulley is second on the team with 11.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. He is also eighth in the league in field goal percentage (.533). Sophomore center John Bohannon is scoring 11.1 points while pulling down 7.4 rebounds, good for eighth in C-USA. He is also second in field goal percentage (.592). Freshman forward Julian Washburn is also scoring 11.1 points. Streeter is also fourth in C-USA with 4.3 assists.
As a team, UTEP is scoring 64.5 points per game and are allowing just 62.9. The Miners are second in the league shooting 46.9-percent from the floor while allowing their opponents to connect on 43.0-percent. UTEP is also connecting on 35.6-percent from three-point range and is allowing 34.5%. The Miners are pulling down 31.0 boards per game and giving up just 31.3, good for second in the league. UTEP is also second in C-USA in assists (14.4).
Head coach Tim Floyd is in his second season at the helm of the UTEP men's basketball program. He has compiled a 38-23 (.623) record as its head coach. In 18 years as a head coach, Floyd is 366-213 (.635).
