Busy Week for Southern Miss Athletics
Feb. 16, 2011
Our basketball teams' need your fan support more than ever this week as the men face league leading UTEP tonight at 7 pm and the improved East Carolina Pirates on Saturday at 4 pm. Our women face Memphis on Thursday at 7 pm and Rice on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Coach Eustachy's team is off to its best start in many years with an 18-6 overall mark and a 7-4 record in C-USA action, and is fighting for post-season play. Gary Flowers continues to be the leading scorer in C-USA and D. J. Newbill is vying for freshman of the year honors. The Golden Eagles RPI has been solid in the mid to high 40's and the next two home games are must wins to remain in strong consideration for NCAA play. The Eagles had four consecutive wins including outstanding road victories at East Carolina and UAB prior to their narrow loss at Memphis past weekend. Our home attendance has been the best in the past 10-12 years and the Golden Eagles really need your support in the final home games of the season. Next week they host Loyola prior to their final home game on March 2 against UAB.
Coach McNelis' squad has been hurt by injuries most of the year; however, they are fighting to remain in the middle of the pack in C-USA play and your support at home can help them finish strong and get ready for conference tournament action.
Golden Eagle Softball had their first pitch of the season last weekend and is off to a great start to the season. They return to action tonight as they face off with South Alabama
This weekend also marks the start of the baseball season as Coach Scott Berry and the Golden Eagles take on Eastern Illinois for a three game series starting on Friday at 4 pm followed by games on Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. The Eagles welcome back a veteran team and are vying for their ninth consecutive NCAA post-season play. The recently announced stadium expansion plans are going well as over half of the new 220 chair back seats have been sold prior to the start of the season.
As you know, our fans are a huge part of our success. The more fans that attend our events and the louder you are, transcends into a much greater atmosphere and gives our student-athletes the added energy to be successful. You definitely play a very important role in our success and we hope you will come in record numbers this week and the remainder of our activities this spring.
Please wear your Black and Gold and be Loud and Proud!
