Feb. 4, 2011
Wednesday, February 2, 2011, was a very good day in the history of Southern Miss athletics. Not only did we have our fourth consecutive football signing class of averaging 15 or more three-star student-athletes, we also had a huge basketball road win over UAB which put us in a virtual tie with UTEP for first place in the C-USA standings!
If you didn't get to the Signing Day Celebration at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, you certainly missed a great time. The fans enjoyed getting numerous student-athlete autographs and pictures. I know Coach Fedora and all of his assistants thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to mingle and visit with our fans. Coach Fedora really got everyone fired up for the 2011 season as we kicked off our "Let the Battles Begin" Eagle Club and season ticket campaign for this year. Coach Blake Anderson and Coach David Duggan gave a great run down on the offense and defensive recruiting class.
On the basketball front, we have a big weekend planned as both the men and women host Marshall. The men's game is at 5 p.m., on Saturday and the women's game is set for 2 p.m., on Sunday. Coach Eustachy's squad is 17-5 and coming off its huge road win at UAB and will be looking to avenge their defeat at Marshall in early January. The Herd upset Memphis last weekend. Coach McNelis' Lady Eagles have won three of their last four C-USA games. We have a full schedule of promotions for each game with a flight giveaway for two from Gulfport Airport and a $500 Cash for College half court shot from Wesley Medical at the men's game. Sunday is our National Girls and Women in sports day at the Lady Eagles game and many of our other teams will be on hand to help celebrate this day.
We really need you to be our Sixth Man this weekend. The men have had three straight excellent crowds and we need to pack Reed Green this weekend. Coach Eustachy and the team continues to say how much the great crowd support has giving them the energy to battle and be successful. You certainly have been a big part of our many victories at home this year.
Again, thanks for your great support at our signing day celebration and we look forward to seeing you this weekend. Let's be `Loud and Proud' and make a difference as we battle Marshall.
