HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini announced today the appointment of Jason Gray as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services. The appointment is subject to approval by the IHL Board of Trustees.
"We are extremely pleased that Jason has decided to come back home to Southern Miss and serve as our Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services," Director of Athletics Richard Giannini said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, not only in the area of compliance and academics but athletics in general. He is a great person with good ideas, and will be a valuable member of the Southern Miss family."
Gray replaces Oberhelman, who left at the end of January to become the Senior Associate Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer at San Diego State. Oberhelman had been with Southern Miss since 2002.
Among Gray's duties will include overseeing all services as they relate to the student-athlete, including the student-athlete enhancement program, life skills, strength and conditioning and sports medicine. In addition, he will be in charge of compliance, student-athlete financial aid, the NCAA certification process and eligibility.
Gray comes to Southern Miss after spending the last six-plus years at Rice University where he served as Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance. While at Rice, Gray coordinated and processed all issues relating to student-athlete eligibility and reinstatement through the NCAA processes. His duties also included handling all interpretive issues with the NCAA in regards to its athletics and university staff.
"My wife and I are extremely pleased to be returning home to the State of Mississippi and to Southern Miss," Gray said. "Don Oberhelman did an outstanding job during the past several years in developing the compliance and student services area to the point of where it is today. It is my goal to maintain the level of excellence already established and to support the coaches and student athletes to the best of my ability."
Gray implemented new education for athletics department staff and university staff concerning NCAA regulations, while handling all drug-testing matters between athletics and the national governing bodies that oversee these tests.
In addition, Gray assisted in the coordination of several NCAA Baseball Regionals as well as various conference championships. He also organized and ran the department's fifth-year/student-worker program.
Prior to his stint at Rice, Gray held the role of Assistant Director of Compliance at Baylor University from 1998-2000, was a compliance intern at LSU during the 1997-98 academic year and a compliance graduate assistant from 1996-97 at West Virginia University.
Gray received his bachelor of arts in sport administration from Southern Miss in 1996 and obtained a masters of science in sport management from West Virginia in 1997.
Gray is married to the former Kristyn King, also a Southern Miss graduate, and the couple has two children, Mary Katherine and Jackson Truett. He is expected to begin his duties Feb.19.
