From the Gridiron to the Court
Jan. 12, 2011
With our 17th consecutive winning football season behind us, we want to thank everyone who followed the Golden Eagles to the bowl in St. Petersburg. It was a fun event and our team fought hard in its effort to defeat Louisville. We also want to thank all those who purchased tickets for the band, Military and youth groups to attend the game.
It's now time for the Southern Miss faithful to shift their attention from the gridiron to the court. Those who have seen this year's basketball teams in action have not been disappointed, and there is much reason to be optimistic about the rest of the season.
Many are comparing this year's men's squad to the best teams in school history. We are among the top teams in the nation in scoring and post-season expectations are high. This team clearly has the potential to contend for a conference title, and you don't want to miss the chance to see them play.
Gary Flowers is the second leading scorer in Conference USA with a 21.2 game average and is truly an exciting player to watch. Two teams that have been ranked nationally most of the year and our league rivals are coming to Hattiesburg in the upcoming weeks. On Saturday, January 15, at 4 pm UCF comes to town led by Michael Jordan's son, followed by perennial C-USA Champ Memphis on Wednesday at 6 pm on January 19 for a televised game from Reed Green Coliseum.
The Lady Golden Eagles will host Tulsa in a televised game on Sunday January 16 at 5 pm, followed by home games against East Carolina on the 23rd and SMU on the 27th. These are all important conference games and our team needs and deserves your support.
I encourage everyone to come out "loud and proud" and ready to back our Golden Eagles. If you've yet to see our basketball team play, you are in for a real treat. So come see what Southern Miss basketball is all about. If you come to just one game, we have a feeling you will be back for many, many more.
