Final Remarks from former Athletic Director, Richard Giannini
Jan. 4, 2012
As I conclude 13 years as your Director of Athletics at Southern Miss, I wanted to take the opportunity to personally thank all Southern Miss athletic fans especially the Eagle Club members and season ticket holders for your tremendous support of our athletics program.
It has been a wonderful journey for Gayle and I and one that we will hold in our hearts forever. We are most proud that we were able to change the face of Golden Eagle athletics with new and improved facilities. We also take great pride in the fact that competitively we continued the high standards in football, basketball and baseball. We are most proud of the fact that the 2011 football team won the Conference USA Championship and enjoyed the most victories in the history of the program; the baseball team has been to nine consecutive NCAA Regionals, including the College World Series in 2009; and the basketball team is off to its best start in history and hopefully a national ranking and post-season play this year.
None of the successes would have been possible without the tremendous financial and volunteer support you have provided Southern Miss athletics during my tenure. You were always there to assist the program in every way possible. Your financial commitment allowed over $70 million in new and renovated facilities and provided the funds to allow our student-athletes and coaches to thrive and compete for championships.
Our goal was always to work as hard as we could everyday to make a difference for Southern Miss athletics and our wonderful student-athletes and coaches. We always strove to do it in the most professional manner and within the rules and regulations of C-USA and the NCAA. We always tried to maintain a high level of integrity and honesty as we sought for total excellence within the program.
As we move into the final chapter of our lives, we will always have a tender place in our hearts for Southern Miss and all the many friends we have made in Hattiesburg and the state of Mississippi. We look forward to continuing to support Golden Eagle athletics as the program celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012.
We look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the games or in person in the coming months to personally thank you for your wonderful care, loyalty and support over the past 13 years.
